Planetary Ball Mill- Pbm 4 Series
The S & S PBM 4 is a durable floor model equipped with four grinding stations, accommodating grinding jars ranging from 12 ml to 500 ml in volume. Designed for high efficiency, it can process up to eight samples simultaneously, ensuring maximum sample throughput for laboratory and industrial applications.
The S & S PBM 4 enables efficient wet grinding, achieving particle sizes below 5 µm. In dry grinding, ultra-fine particles tend to develop surface charges and agglomerate, making further size reduction challenging. By introducing a liquid or dispersant, particles remain well-dispersed, ensuring effective grinding. For nano-scale grinding (particles 100 nm or smaller), friction is the dominant mechanism over impact. This is accomplished using a high concentration of small grinding balls, maximizing surface contact and friction points. For optimal performance, the grinding jar should be filled with 60% small grinding balls, ensuring precision and efficiency in ultra-fine grinding applications.
S & S Pbm 4 – Designed For Mechanochemical Applications
The S & S PBM 4 is engineered for advanced mechanical alloying and mechanosynthesis processes. While a 1:2 speed ratio is sufficient for most reactions, certain applications require higher impact energy for effective processing. To meet these demands, the S & S PBM 4 offers an increased speed ratio of 1:2.5 or 1:3.0, delivering enhanced grinding efficiency. The optimal speed ratio and grinding parameters vary based on the material and must be determined through trial and optimization for the best results.
Pbm 4 – Functional Principle
In the S & S PBM 4 Planetary Ball Mill, the grinding jars are positioned eccentrically on the sun wheel. As the sun wheel rotates, it moves in the opposite direction to the grinding jars at a speed ratio of 1:2, 1:2.5, or 1:3, depending on the application.
This motion generates superimposed rotational movements, known as Coriolis forces, subjecting the grinding balls to intense frictional and impact interactions. The resulting high dynamic energies enable efficient and precise particle size reduction, making the planetary ball mill a highly effective solution for fine grinding applications.
